One Small Step For Man......

There has been a lot of talk about things of the astronomical variety this past week. From an American spy satellite that apparently is not capable of maintaining orbit any longer due to power loss to the planet Mercury, seen in recent photos as possible imploding on itself. Will all of those episodes of 3rd Rock from the Sun on DVD suddenly be worth a fortune when we are the 2nd rock from the sun like a error on an old baseball card? But I digress into a nerd fueled black hole incapable of logic or sensible discourse.......

As a kid I was fascinated by space. Mostly due to the movies like Star Wars and Space Camp, I wanted to be an astronaut and read every book on the subject. It is worthy of noting that when checking out books from the library, make the clear distinction between Astronomy and Astrology.

The universe has been set in order and all of the heavenly bodies given a very specific gravity and orbit. The planets have several orbits. Daily. Monthly. Yearly. Each of the planets moves in its specific and unique way but always centered around the sun.

As we endeavor to become a community that names the name of Christ as our core we develop our own orbit. We are together but on our own paths, our own unique rhythms. The key is to always remember where we are in relation to the Son. There will be times where we are so close that we radiate and reflect the pure life-giving light of Christ. There are other times when our orbit takes us to the outer reaches of space where few know what exist.

One of my favorite childhood books was "Someone is Eating the Sun!". It is about a group of farm animals that operate in panic mode as they experience an eclipse. They exclaim with a "flipity, flap and a flutter" that someone is surely devouring the Sun.

What are the things that possibly come between you and God? Where are you in your own orbit? Are you far out and about to be declassified as a planet in the same vain of the late planet Pluto?

In the same way that the animals were relieved when the moon passed by and the sun was still there Matthew recounts the emotions of the wise men that were seeking out Christ: "When they saw the star they were overjoyed" (Matt 2:10).

Find peace and renewal in your orbit this week and I pray that the draw of Christ will keep you turning toward Him
